Why Salt?

Why did Jesus say the christian is The Salt of the earth? I pondered on this and finally decided to find out what made salt unique or special to Jesus. Salt is almost the cheapest commodity in most grocery stores. If salt was considered a precious element,it would be sold at a price higher than or comparable to gold or diamond. After reading up on salt the statement "beautiful things come in maller packages" had a whole new meaning to me.

Salt is used in many industries ranging from the construction of foundations for highways to enhancing and preserving the flavor food items. Salt is therefore an essential element for human existence. Jesus tells the disciples in

Matthew 5:13 "you are the salt of the earth."

The presence of a christian in a family or community should make a difference. The christian is makes foundation for his sphere of inflence. This can not be possible without some degree of stability, selfcontrol and the ability to apply knowledge correctly. These qualities bind people together just like the salt that binds the soil on which highways are built upon.

The christian should preserve and enhance the hearer at all times just like the natural salt preseves and enhances the quality of foods. The words of a christians should be as described in

Colossians 4:6  "Let your word be always with grace, seasoned with salt, so as to know how ye ought to answer each one"

 A christian does not sit and plan to destroy others with words but must plans to speak gentle and kind words because that is the nature of a preserver. A christian has no choice but to be The Salt. Jesus Himslef requires this of the christian. Therefore, he/she must wake up daily with this consciousness and a  desire to enhance someone's life. People should want to talk to the christian because he/she uses choice words and not hurtful and angry word. This is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength because the christian passes on truthful information using seasoned words instead of speaking the truth with harsh words.

Make a conscious effort from this day to be an ehancer and preserver in words and actions. Life is too short for all the bickerings and fights we indulge into. It is better to use the short time to preserve and enhance the lives of our hearers. Decide to talk nicely to your spouse,coworkers,neighbours and anyone you come in contact with. Peace and grace are multiplied to those who obey God's word.
